Debunking major myths about protein

Debunking major myths about protein

Can protein make you stronger? Yeah sure, but not instantly. Can protein provide you energy? Obviously yes, but not if you want to eat and drink only protein. There are so many myths surrounding the use of a protein that people need to be educated about. Protein makes people stronger but due to the myths surrounding it, most people believe anything in the name of protein. You need to know that this  macronutrient is almost like every other. But there are quite many myths surrounding this nutrient too. So, let’s try to debunk all of them.

Is protein like every other nutrient?

Well, protein is just a nutrient with its function. But because we use it in some specific things because of its functions, we think that it is special. Like carbohydrate has the functions in your body to provide glucose, fat is necessary so your body can get energy from the fat under your skin when in need. The same way protein does its work too, by providing you muscle power, energy, and repairing your cells.

The specifications of protein is to make you stronger which is why you get energy during intense exercise. This makes protein a quick energy recharge before exercise.

You just take it, by drinking a protein supplement, or eating food that has protein in it and as the protein breaks into amino acids it provides you energy. Just as simple as that. But there are quite many myths surrounding this nutrient too. So, let’s try to debunk all of them.

1. Too much protein is good for you

Generally, people think taking too much protein is good for you but it is not. There is a certain amount that is enough for a normal person but if you take more than that you might start losing weight rapidly. In some cases, people who lost weight gained it again but slowly. You might experience bad breath, dehydration, diarrhea, and constipation as well.

Long-term issues include kidney damage, heart diseases, and increased cancer risk. Thus, an average person should see what their requirements are and then start taking it. If you are going to start working out then you should take enough protein.

2. No carbs, only protein is enough

It is important to take carbohydrates in a good amount too, so that protein can be used for its functions like repairing your cells, making your muscles stronger, etc. If you would not consume good carbs in enough  amount then your body would use protein to make energy. If the protein would be lost in just providing the energy your muscle needs would not be fulfilled.

So, you must take carbohydrates as well and let protein do its work. Make sure you follow a diet plan that has different kinds of nutrients added in it. If you would not eat properly your body would lose important nutrients for performing basic functions.

3. Vegans or vegetarians are not getting enough

This is a well-boasted myth by those who do not support vegans or vegetarians. Most people are unaware of the fact that they can get enough protein or sometimes more depending on their diet plan. There is another misconception also, that vegan supplements are not enough which is not true in any way. The protein game is all based on a diet and supplement plan.

4. Not all sources are good

Every source of protein is amazing. Whether you eat meat, fish, chicken, pork, etc. everything is good. If you like to eat meat and you want to have it, add it to your diet. If you are a vegan or vegetarian then you can add plant protein. You can add soy, beans, lentils, etc. to your diet plan based on your taste. Add milk in your diet if you are not lactose intolerant, it is an excellent source of protein.

Whey protein is not good

Instead, we should say whey protein is quite good. A lot better than many other protein supplements. There are not one but too many myths surrounding whey protein. So, we would take them one by one.

1. Magically grows muscle

If you have ever taken any protein supplement you would already know that this is an utter myth. No supplement would grow your muscle magically ever. But whey protein is considered a good supplement. Yet it would take your time as well as patience.

2. Only take if you work out

Everybody has their own needs. If you work physically more your body would demand more energy. More energy requires more nutrients. Hence it is important to take protein that is a good source for a quick energy recharge. You can take the whey protein supplement drink when you feel less energized.

3. Every whey protein is the same

Not every protein is the same and not every whey protein is the same. You would find the difference in just one month of trial. Thus, it is important to know what whey protein is good according to your needs and body conditions.
